61 RV Statistics: Ownership, Travel, Shipments, and Economic Impact

RV statistics show a large and changing U.S. recreation market: 8.1 million households owned an RV in 2025, while 2024 wholesale shipments reached 333,733 units. The measures below distinguish surveyed ownership and intentions, manufacturer shipments, broad economic-impact estimates, and National Park Service visitor nights.

RV Ownership Statistics and the U.S. Owner Base

The 2025 Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Profile, based on an IPSOS survey, estimates that 8.1 million U.S. households currently own an RV. This is a household estimate, not a count of RV units, vehicles, or individual users. Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Profile

The same 2025 profile reports substantial potential demand, but the measure is expressed intent rather than a sales projection:

  • 16.9 million U.S. households expressed strong interest in purchasing an RV within the next five years.
  • The median age of an RV owner was 49 years.
  • Owners aged 35–54 accounted for 46% of current owners.
  • First-time owners accounted for 36% of current owners.
  • The profile’s combined Hispanic-American, African-American, Asian-American, and LGBTQ+ growth audiences accounted for 30% of current owners.
  • Owners with children under 18 accounted for 43% of owners.

The growth-audience figure is an RVIA composite grouping and should not be read as one demographic identity. Ownership and intent measures also describe surveyed populations and are not interchangeable with registrations or completed purchases.

RV Owner Demographics and Future Demand

The 2021-to-2025 profile comparison suggests a younger and more family-inclusive owner base, although it compares survey editions rather than a continuously measured administrative series. The median owner age fell from 53 years in 2021 to 49 years in 2025.

Measure 2021 2025 Population and period
Median owner age 53 years 49 years U.S. RV owners
Owners with children under 18 34% 43% U.S. RV owners
First-time owners 31% 36% U.S. RV owners
Median annual RV use 20 days 30 days U.S. RV owners

The 2025 profile also identifies young families—owners under 45 with children under 18—as 31% of owners. Median annual use was 30 days, compared with 20 days in the 2021 study; RVIA characterizes that as a 50% increase, but it remains a cross-wave survey comparison. These figures describe owner demographics and reported behavior, not the number of trips, nights, unique travelers, or RVs. Changes may also reflect survey wording and sample composition.

RV Use, Motivations, and Participation Data

The 2025 profile connects RV ownership with relaxation, nature, family logistics, outdoor activities, and work flexibility. Motivation responses and activity responses are not mutually exclusive, so percentages should not be added.

  • Unwinding and relaxing was a purchase motivator for 58% of surveyed RVers in the United States in 2025.
  • Spending time in nature was a purchase motivator for 57% of surveyed RVers in 2025.
  • Visiting locations with natural beauty was a purchase motivator for 53% of surveyed RVers in 2025.
  • Bringing pets was a crucial purchase factor for 43% of surveyed RVers in 2025.
  • Fishing was enjoyed by 47% of U.S. RV owners in 2025.
  • Hiking was enjoyed by 44% of U.S. RV owners in 2025.
  • Visiting local attractions was reported by 37% of U.S. RV owners in 2025.

Remote work was present but not universal. In 22% of U.S. RVer households, someone currently worked remotely in 2025, and among those remote-working households, 54% said work had been done from an RV.

The second figure is conditional and is not 54% of all RVers. Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Profile

The purchase-channel and financing measures add context to how transactions were reported:

  • 71% of U.S. RV buyers chose a new RV in 2025, while the remainder selected other purchase options such as used RVs.
  • 94% of U.S. RV transactions occurred in person in 2025.
  • 45% of owners paid cash, 27% used dealer financing, and 20% used private financing in 2025.

Financing shares may not sum to 100% because of rounding or other methods, and these are self-reported survey measures rather than a sales-register breakdown.

RVIA’s manufacturer survey recorded 333,733 U.S. wholesale RV shipments in 2024, up 6.6% from 313,174 in 2023. December shipments were 23,153 units in 2024, up 7.6% from 21,522 in December 2023. 2024 RV Shipments up 6%

The annual product mix was sharply different between towables and motorhomes:

RV type 2024 shipments Change from 2023 Geography and measure
All towable RVs 298,842 +11.8% U.S. wholesale shipments
All motorhomes 34,891 -23.9% U.S. wholesale shipments
Travel trailers 237,631 +15.7% U.S. wholesale shipments
Fifth-wheels 53,958 +0.5% U.S. wholesale shipments
Folding camping trailers 3,991 -14.6% U.S. wholesale shipments
Truck campers 3,262 -7.2% U.S. wholesale shipments

Among motorhome classes, conventional Type A shipments were 6,706 in 2024, down 31.6% from 9,806 in 2023. Van Camper Type B shipments were 8,349, down 30.0%, while Mini Type C shipments were 19,836, down 17.8%.

Park Model RV shipments were 3,927 units in 2024, down 22.3% from 5,054 in 2023; RVIA reports them separately from the total RV shipment table. In December 2024, towable shipments were 20,814 units, up 11.4%, motorhome shipments were 2,339, down 17.7%, and Park Model RV shipments were 273, up 5.0%.

These are wholesale shipments, not retail registrations or consumer purchases.

RV Industry Economic Impact, Jobs, and Taxes

The RVs Move America Economic Impact Study estimates that the U.S. RV industry has $159 billion in total annual economic impact. The reported annual estimate covers a broad footprint: manufacturing, sales, rental, repair, storage, service, aftermarket activity, financing, insurance, campgrounds, and RV trip spending. RVs Move America Economic Impact Study

The same study reports:

  • 643,238 jobs supported across the included U.S. industry footprint.
  • More than $46.4 billion in annual wages paid within that footprint.
  • $19.6 billion in federal, state, and local taxes contributed annually.

The study divides the reported impact into major components:

Component Reported annual impact Scope
RV manufacturers and suppliers $70 billion U.S. economic-impact estimate
RV campgrounds and related travel $50 billion U.S. economic-impact estimate
RV sales and service $38 billion U.S. economic-impact estimate

These components are parts of the $159 billion study total and should not be added to unrelated shipment or retail measures. The estimate is not RV retail revenue alone.

National Park RV Overnight-Stay Statistics

National Park Service overnight stays measure visitor nights, not unique RVs, households, or visitors. The NPS defines an overnight stay as one night within a park by a visitor, and park-specific counting procedures and multipliers can change over time. VUStats Home – Social Science

NPS RV camper overnight stays across U.S. National Park Service units were:

Year RV camper overnight stays Definition
2019 2,466,682 Visitor nights in the RV camper category
2020 1,459,483 Pandemic-period visitor nights
2021 2,473,338 Visitor nights in the RV camper category
2022 2,566,942 Visitor nights in the RV camper category
2023 2,566,383 Visitor nights in the RV camper category
2024 2,673,636 Visitor nights in the RV camper category

The 2020 observation is a pandemic-period measure whose comparability may be affected by park operations and availability. The NPS report for 2024 also records 1,365,243 concessioner-campground overnight stays, 3,262,340 tent-camper overnight stays, and 1,755,518 backcountry overnight stays. Overnight Stays by Category and Year: 1979 to 2025

Other 2024 NPS overnight-stay categories were 3,207,096 concessioner-lodging stays, 1,023,377 miscellaneous stays, and 44,041 non-recreation stays. These categories are distinct from RV camper stays and should not be combined into an RV participation total.
