51 Motorhome Statistics on Shipments, Ownership and Travel

Motorhome statistics span manufacturing, household ownership, travel behavior and destination demand. The clearest U.S. production measure is RV Industry Association (RVIA) wholesale shipments of Type A, Type B and Type C motorhomes; other figures below describe the broader RV market or all national-park visitors and are labeled accordingly.

Key Motorhome Statistics

The most useful headline figures are:

  • In 2024, 34,891 motorhomes were shipped wholesale in the United States.
  • In 2025, 36,029 U.S. motorhome wholesale shipments were recorded, up 3.3% from 2024.
  • In 2024, Type C motorhomes accounted for 19,836 U.S. wholesale shipments.
  • In 2025, Type C shipments reached 20,903 units in the United States, up 5.4% from 2024.
  • In 2025, Type C motorhomes represented 51.3% of December U.S. motorhome shipments.
  • In the 2025 U.S. RV-owner profile, about 8.1 million households owned an RV.
  • In the 2025 U.S. profile, 6.7% of vehicle-owning households owned an RV.
  • In 2025, 16.9 million U.S. households expressed strong interest in buying an RV within five years.
  • U.S. RV owners reported 30 median days of RV use in 2025.
  • Thirty-six percent of U.S. RV owners were first-time owners in the 2025 profile.

U.S. Motorhome Statistics: Shipments and Market Scale

RVIA’s manufacturer survey counted 45,879 U.S. wholesale motorhome shipments in 2023, followed by 34,891 in 2024. The series therefore records a 23.9% fall from 2023 to 2024, but it should not be read as retail sales, registrations or the size of the installed fleet. (2024 RV Shipments up 6%)

Measure Period U.S. result
All motorhome wholesale shipments 2023 45,879 units
All motorhome wholesale shipments 2024 34,891 units
Change in all motorhome shipments 2024 vs. 2023 -23.9%
Total RV shipments, all categories 2024 333,733 units; +6.6% year over year

The broader RV total reached 333,733 units in 2024 and included towable and motorized categories, so the motorhome figure is a category count rather than a retail market-share estimate. Motorhomes accounted for 34,891 of those total RV shipments in the same RVIA table, a comparison within the wholesale series rather than a statement about ownership or sales share.

December provides a shorter-term signal: 2,339 motorhomes shipped wholesale in the United States in December 2024, down 17.7% from December 2023. The monthly measure is not interchangeable with the annual total.

Within the RVIA motorized categories, Type A, Type B van-campers and Type C mini-motorhomes show different shipment levels. Type C was the largest of the three reported categories in 2024 and also led the 2025 recovery.

RVIA motorhome category 2024 shipments Change from 2023 2025 shipments Change from 2024
Type A 6,706 -31.6% 6,902 +2.9%
Type B van-camper 8,349 -30.0% 8,224 -1.5%
Type C mini-motorhome 19,836 -17.8% 20,903 +5.4%
All motorhomes 34,891 -23.9% 36,029 +3.3%

The category figures come from RVIA wholesale shipment reporting, not registrations or the active fleet. (2024 RV Shipments up 6%; December 2025 Full Market Report)

The 2025 report also recorded 2,795 motorhome shipments in December, up 19.5% from December 2024. Type C motorhomes represented 51.3% of December 2025 shipments, a monthly category share that should not be treated as an annual ownership share.

RV Ownership, Use and Motorhome Travel Participation

Motorhome-specific ownership totals are not supplied by the owner profile; its population covers all RV types. That broader context still shows the scale of the potential recreational-vehicle audience: about 8.1 million U.S. households owned an RV in the 2025 profile, representing 6.7% of vehicle-owning households.

The same survey estimated 16.9 million U.S. households had strong interest in purchasing an RV within five years. This is stated purchase intent, not a completed-purchase forecast and not a motorhome-only demand estimate. (Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Profile)

  • The median RV was used 30 days per year by U.S. owners in the 2025 profile.
  • Median annual RV use rose from 20 days in 2021 to 30 days in 2025, a reported 50% increase across survey waves.
  • First-time owners made up 36% of U.S. RV owners in 2025.
  • Growth audiences represented 30% of current U.S. RV owners in 2025, using RVIA’s composite audience definition.
  • Forty-three percent of U.S. RV owners reported children under 18 in the household in 2025.
  • Among RV-owning households with someone working remotely, 54% said work had been done from an RV in 2025.

These are survey estimates and self-reported measures for the broader RV population. The 2021-to-2025 use comparison should not be interpreted as a causal trend without checking methodology and sample comparability.

Motorhome Buyer Statistics: Motivations, Demographics and Financing

The 2025 profile places the median age of U.S. RV owners at 49, while 46% were ages 35–54. The median declined from 53 in 2021 to 49 in 2025, a cross-wave comparison rather than evidence about individual aging or causation.

2025 U.S. RV-owner measure Result
Median owner age 49 years
Owners ages 35–54 46%
Relaxing and unwinding as a purchase motivator 58%
Spending time in nature as a purchase motivator 57%
Visiting naturally beautiful locations as a purchase motivator 53%
Bringing pets as an important ownership factor 43%

Motivation responses could include multiple reasons, so the percentages do not represent mutually exclusive buyer segments. The results describe RV owners broadly rather than motorhome buyers alone. (Go RVing RV Owner Demographic Profile)

Financing data also covers all RV owners. Dealer financing was used by 27% of owners, while private financing was used by 20%; the categories may not sum to 100% because of other responses or rounding.

Motorhome Travel Demand and National-Park Visitation Statistics

National Park Service visitation is a useful destination-demand indicator, but it does not identify the visitor’s vehicle type. The National Park System recorded 325,498,646 recreation visits in 2023 and 331,863,358 in 2024, with the NPS describing the increase as about 2%.

Year U.S. National Park System recreation visits
2019 327,516,619
2020 237,064,332
2021 297,115,406
2022 311,985,998
2023 325,498,646
2024 331,863,358

The historical series shows the 2020 pandemic-period decline and subsequent annual totals, but it does not measure motorhome trips, nights or campsite use. (Visitation Numbers)

In 2024, the National Park System had 433 parks, of which 404 counted visitors. Fifty-five percent of parks had above-average spring and fall off-season visitation that year, and the NPS visitor-use program covers more than 400 national parks throughout the year. Motorhome Tourism Economics and Vehicle-Registration Context

The NPS has reported visitor-spending economic effects for more than 30 years, from the 1990s through 2024. Its socioeconomic monitoring samples visitor surveys at 24 park units per year from 2022 onward, and the 2024 analysis incorporated new visitor-survey data from 12 of the 24 SEM parks surveyed that year.

Those program figures describe NPS measurement design and visitor-spending analysis, not direct motorhome spending. NPS economic effects are modeled estimates, and the visitor sample is not a motorhome-specific sample. The United Kingdom’s official vehicle data supplies broader transport context, not a motorhome fleet count:

  • The UK recorded 2.5 million vehicles registered for the first time in 2023.
  • Of those broad vehicle categories, 342,000 zero-emission vehicles and 314,000 zero-emission cars were registered for the first time in 2023.
  • At the end of December 2023, the UK had 41.2 million licensed vehicles, including 1.0 million licensed zero-emission vehicles.

These UK figures cover all vehicle types, and the published headline measures should not be presented as motorhome registrations without a vehicle-body-type extract from the underlying tables. (Vehicle licensing statistics: 2023)
