60 National Park Statistics on Scale, Visitation, Spending and Economic Impact

National park statistics describe a large U.S. system, a long visitation record and an economy that extends beyond park boundaries. The measures below distinguish recreation visits from non-recreation entries, overnight stays from people, and observed counts from modeled estimates.

Key National Park Statistics

The most useful national park statistics span system scale, recent visitation, visitor behavior, spending and infrastructure:

  • The National Park Service manages 433 individual units in the United States National Park System on the current NPS page.
  • NPS units cover more than 85 million acres across the United States and its territories on the current NPS page.
  • The NPS recorded 331,863,358 recreation visits in 2024 across NPS units.
  • The NPS recorded 237,064,332 recreation visits in 2020 across NPS units.
  • The NPS annual series contains 16,360,673,970 recreation visits from 1904 through 2024 across NPS units.
  • NPS concessioner lodging accounted for 2,870,496 overnight stays in 2023 across NPS units.

National Park System Scale, Units and Protected Acreage

The National Park System is broader than the everyday phrase “national parks.” The National Park Service (NPS) says it manages 433 individual units, alongside more than 150 related areas, and that units cover more than 85 million acres.

The system’s current-page figures also define its geographic and administrative reach:

  • NPS-managed units occur in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.
  • The system has at least 19 naming designations, which are administrative or legal labels rather than separate visitor populations.
  • The system was created as a federal bureau on August 25, 1916.

The acreage figure is explicitly stated as “more than 85 million,” so it should be treated as a lower-bound estimate rather than an exact total. The 433-unit count includes multiple designations commonly called parks, while the more than 150 related areas are not counted as those 433 individual units.

NPS recreation visits are entries onto NPS lands or waters except non-recreation visits, and a visit is not necessarily a unique person. That definition matters when comparing annual totals or relating visitation to population, travel or spending.

Year or period Recreation visits Geography and measure
1904 120,690 NPS units; first year in the annual series
1982 244,924,579 NPS units; annual total
2000 285,891,275 NPS units; annual total
2016 330,971,689 NPS units; annual total
2019 327,516,619 NPS units; annual total
2020 237,064,332 NPS units; annual total
2021 297,115,406 NPS units; annual total
2022 311,985,998 NPS units; annual total
2023 325,498,646 NPS units; annual total
2024 331,863,358 NPS units; annual total

The recent series shows 2020 at 237,064,332 recreation visits, followed by 297,115,406 in 2021 and 331,863,358 in 2024. The 2024 total was above the 2019 total of 327,516,619, although annual totals alone do not identify why visitation changed.

Across the full NPS annual series, recreation visits totaled 16,360,673,970 from 1904 through 2024. Because reporting coverage and historical definitions changed over time, the 1904 value and the modern totals are not directly comparable without that qualification.

National Park Overnight Stays and Visitor Segments

Overnight-stay data measure nights in defined NPS reporting categories, not unique visitors and not all lodging in nearby communities. In 2023, the national NPS overnight report recorded the following categories:

2023 NPS overnight category Overnight stays Definition note
Concessioner lodging 2,870,496 NPS overnight-use category
Concessioner campers 1,307,099 Defined concessioner-camper category
Tent campers 3,161,770 NPS category; not individual people
RV campers 2,566,383 NPS category; not individual people
Backcountry campers 1,793,914 NPS category; not individual people
Miscellaneous 1,322,980 NPS reporting category
Non-recreation 42,689 Separate from recreation visits

The 2024 visitor-spending report uses a different unit: an estimated 128 million party days or nights in local gateway regions around NPS sites. A party is a group sharing travel and expenses; day trips count days, while overnight trips count nights.

The estimated 2024 party-day or party-night mix was 39.1% lodging outside parks, 20.9% local day trips, 16.6% non-local day trips, 12.2% other unpaid lodging outside parks, 8.0% camping outside parks, 2.4% camping inside NPS units and 0.8% lodging inside NPS units.

National Park Visitor Spending by Trip Type

The 2024 visitor-spending report estimated $29.0 billion in visitor spending in local gateway regions around NPS sites. These figures are modeled from party days or nights and spending profiles, so they describe estimated local economic activity rather than spending inside NPS boundaries alone.

2024 trip type Estimated spending Share of visitor spending
Lodge outside park $21.8 billion 75.3%
Non-local day trip $2.2 billion 7.7%
Camp outside park $1.7 billion 5.8%
Local day trip $1.3 billion 4.4%
NPS lodge trip $0.6 billion 1.9%
NPS camp trip $0.5 billion 1.8%

Average spending also varied by trip segment. The estimated average was $435.25 per party per day or night for lodging outside parks, $164.02 for camping outside parks and $48.11 for local day trips.

These are party-level averages, not per-person spending. The report’s local, state and national contribution estimates should not be summed across geographic levels.

National Park Economic Impact by Sector

For 2023, the NPS visitor-spending model estimated 247,300 jobs supported directly and 168,100 additional jobs through secondary effects. Combined effects supported 415,400 jobs, $19.36 billion in labor income, $32.03 billion in value added and $55.57 billion in economic output in the U.S. economy.

The direct sector estimates show where visitor-spending effects were concentrated:

Sector Direct jobs, 2023 Direct economic output, 2023
Lodging 89,200 $9.9 billion
Restaurants 68,600 $5.15 billion
Recreation industries 34,400 $2.22 billion
Retail 21,300 $1.19 billion
Transportation 15,500 $1.90 billion
Camping 6,100 $0.56 billion

Lodging and restaurants were the largest listed direct employment categories, with 89,200 and 68,600 jobs respectively. The estimates are economic-model results based on visitor data, spending profiles and multipliers; they are not the same as government revenue or business profits.

National Park Transportation and Regional Visitation Data

The FY2024 Federal Lands Transportation Program report describes a transportation inventory and funding program whose scope may differ from other NPS transportation documents. It reported 5,600 miles of paved roads, 1,334 bridges, 61 tunnels and approximately 1,000 miles of transportation trails.

It also reported approximately 100 NPS transit and ferry systems with 30.5 million passenger boardings. Boardings are not unique passengers, and the system count is approximate.

Regional reporting retained legacy pre-2018 labels and separated recreation from non-recreation visits in 2024:

Legacy region, 2024 Recreation visits Non-recreation visits
Southeast 72,924,691 68,837,612
Pacific West 61,891,827 4,901,692
National Capital 56,539,543 80,996,591

Non-recreation entries include commuting, business, civic, tour and research-related entries, so they should not be treated as recreational visitation. The same report states that approximately $297.5 million was available through the FY2024 Federal Lands Transportation Program, funding 462 projects in approximately 146 parks and 43 states; this is program scope, not the total NPS budget.
